A CHAIRDE
THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL [GST]
www.southerntrail.net WELCOMES THE RECENTLY LAUNCHED SCOPING STUDY
[below] INTO THE PROVISION OF A NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK WHICH WILL
INCLUDE THE GST. THIS RECOGNITION IS VINDICATION OF THE EFFORTS OF OUR
VOLUNTARY GROUP OVER TWENTY YEARS.
HOWEVER, THE STUDY FAILS TO
ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GST CAMPAIGN AND DEVELOPMENT HAS ACTUALLY PROVIDED
A PUBLIC AWARENESS AND A TEMPLATE WHICH CAN BE USED TO EXPEDITE FURTHER
EXPANSION IN A MOST COST EFFECTIVE WAY.
THEREFORE, THE GST IS OF THE VIEW THAT
COMPLETION OF A LIMERICK-TRALEE CYCLEWAY SHOULD BE GIVEN AN EQUAL
PRIORITY AS THAT FROM DUBLIN TO GALWAY. IT WOULD LINK TWO LARGE
CONURBATIONS [EACH CLOSE TO AN AIRPORT] WITH A NUMBER OF SIZEABLE
INTERMEDIATE TOWNS. WITH PROPER MARKETING IT SHOULD BE AN IMPORTANT
ADDITIONAL TOURISM ATTRACTION AS WELL AS BENEFITTING LOCAL PEOPLE OF ALL
AGES AND ABILITIES.
THE GST IS REQUESTING SUPPORT FOR THE
EXISTING ABBEYFEALE TO ARDAGH [CO. LIMERICK] TRAIL TO BE EXTENDED IN
BOTH DIRECTIONS.

National Cycle
Network Scoping Study and Dublin-Galway Route Feasibility & Delivery
Study
Ireland's National Cycle Policy Framework
presents a vision of "creating a culture of cycling in Ireland". The
policy aims not only to deliver a five-fold increase in cycling for
commuting purposes, but it also explicitly recognises the need to
support and encourage all other types of cycling, including recreational
and tourist cycling. "Recreational routes", says the policy, "in and
around urban areas, which in turn link to rural areas, are very
important."
In response to this objective, and at the request of the Minister, the
National Roads Authority undertook to carry out a scoping study into the
delivery of a National Cycle Network that would encourage cycling as a
transport mode, leisure activity, and tourist attraction in Ireland. An
advisory group, under the auspices of the National Trails Advisory
Committee assisted in the project.
The result of the scoping study is an outline of the corridors that a
proposed National Cycle Network would consist of. The nodes of the
proposed network are settlements around Ireland with populations of
10,000 or more, and the identified route corridors also tie into tourist
attractions around the country. The resulting potential Network
identified in the scoping study is approximately 2,000km in length. It
is envisaged that the identified route corridors will provide a skeleton
around which routes should develop nationwide, with potential for links
into and between the corridors, particularly where existing
infrastructure allows cost effective delivery.
As a step towards moving from the scoping study to implementation, the
NRA are to undertake a route feasibility and delivery study for the
Dublin-Galway corridor. This work will include, an examination of all
options for route sections along the corridor, development of
appropriate design standards and construction specification, a tentative
construction delivery programme, and the development of a robust cost
estimate. The advisory group which assisted in the National Cycle
Network scoping study will continue to assist in this next step.

GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL NEWS: JUNE 2010
Walkers and cyclists are availing of the long fine
spell to explore the GST from Abbeyfeale to Ardagh; enjoying the safe
traffic free route which is very well maintained by the workers on the Rural
Social Scheme. The generosity of the rural communities along the way is
greatly appreciated with €1549 being collected at recent Churchgates as
follows: Ardagh/Carrigkerry €496;Templeglantine €456;Monagea €301 and
Kilcolman/Coolcappa €296.The urban centres of Abbeyfeale, NCWest and
Rathkeale will hold their collections later in the year.
These funds will assist in the development of the Ardagh to Rathkeale
section where the initial clearance earlier this year will be augmented by
further works in the near future. The financial assistance of the Dept.of
Rural,Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs is invaluable in enabling this latest
extension to be progressed. Indeed, the Department has consistently
supported the GST over several years.
The GST was represented by Vice-Chairman Denis McAuliffe at the
International Greenways Conference in Madrid earlier this month. Over 160
delegates attended and all were provided with literature and information on
the GST. A full report on the Conference will issue later.
Ministerial Visit to Great Southern Trail :
Ardagh-Rathkeale Section

The new Minister for Community, Equality and
Gaeltacht Affairs, Mr. Pat Carey, TD visited the Great Southern Trail (GST)
on Friday, 16th April. He was accompanied by his Press Secretary, Tadhg Ó
Gairbhí, a native of Rathkeale and Ms. Sorcha de Brúch, Personal Secretary.
He was welcomed to Ardagh by Mr. Liam O'Mahony, Cathaoirleach, GST who
expressed appreciation for the Department's continued support of the Trail's
development and expansion.
The Minister received briefings from Mick
Dwyer, Assistant Divisional Engineer, Iarnród Éireann; Anthony Coleman,
Limerick County Council; Shay Riordan, Manager, West Limerick Resources and
Barry Connolly, Manager, Rural Social Scheme. The Minister viewed the
previously developed trail from Abbeyfeale to Ardagh and walked along a
short section of the newly cleared extension to Rathkeale. He looked forward
to the integration of this additional section into the walking / cycling
route and complimented all concerned for their efforts to enhance the
amenities for the people of the locality and visitors alike.

restored buildings are a credit to their respective owners. There are also
scenes of other aspects of railway heritage; gates, bridges, tunnel etc.
These caught the eye of the photographer M. Gilbert Perrin, President of
European Greenways. He walked the route on August 19th 2009 accompanied by
some Great Southern Trail members.
M. Perrin also met the Rural Social Scheme
workers who maintain the Trail. Subsequent to the visit the Great Southern

The following were elected at the recent AGM of the Great Southern Trail: Cathaoirleach & P.R.O.; Liam O'Mahony, NCWest: Chairman GST Ltd.; Mike Mac An tSaoir, NCWest: Vice-Chair; Denis McAuliffe, Templeglantine: Secretary/Rúnaí; Mike Mac Domhnaill, Caisleán Nua Thiar: Treasurers;Pat Condon,NCWest & Máire Ní Chearmada, T'glantine: Works Officer; Tom McCoy, NCWest. As there are seven Parishes traversed by the Trail between Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale the AGM decided to elect a Local Coordinator for GST affairs in each Parish as follows: Abbeyfeale-Eileen Woulfe, Cratloe West; Templeglantine-Denis McAuliffe; Monagea-Morgan O'Shea, Ballyshane; NCWest-Mike Mac Domhnaill, Gortbuí; Ardagh-Tom Heffernan, Kilrodane; Coolcappa-Nora O'Grady, Ballykenry; Rathkeale-John Ruttle, Church St.
The growing popularity of the GST throughout its length was much remarked upon at the meeting. This fact was illustrated by the visit of ninety Limerick City walkers to the Abbeyfeale-Barnagh section recently with consequent benefit to local enterprises. AGM of Great Southern Trail this Thursday [18th Feb.2010]
All supporters are invited to the AGM of the Great Southern Trail this Thursday,18th February at 8pm in the GAA Rooms, The Demesne [off Church St.], Newcastle West. As the Trail expands the Committee would appreciate the active involvement of more locals in each Parish along the route between Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale. Beidh fáilte romhat.
The past year of 2009 has been a busy one with the major development being the opening of the Barnagh-NCWest section which necessitated major works on the viaduct at Garryduff. This extension completed the 17 miles from Abbeyfeale to Ardagh. As the year ended the clearance of a further 5 miles from Ardagh to Rathkeale was undertaken and it is hoped to resurface this section in 2010.Thanks to the Heritage Council, Limerick Co. Co., Fáilte Ireland, Dept. Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, CIÉ, Rural Social Scheme, Shannon Development, West Limerick Resources and Foras na Gaeilge for their support and funding over the years. The continued support of those who use the Trail and of all voluntary contributors-especially Mike Condon for providing a new bridge at Devon Road- is hugely appreciated. In 2009 the GST received over €4,000 at the Churchgate Collections in the Parishes along the route. These monies are essential for routine maintenance, insurance and the hosting of local events.
The GST hosted several events during the year and received many visitors. Among the highlights were: Jan.'09 - Dr.Hugh Maguire of Heritage Council visited Garryduff Viaduct ,Tullig Wood and Devon Road Station. February-GST featured on Nuacht TG4. March-New bridge erected at Devon Road; Nostalgic film show at NCWest Library by Tony Price, Liam Mooney of Irish Railway Record Society www.irrs.ie June-Demonstration of electric bikes by Marty Mannering www.goeco.ie
August-Visits by: Minister Éamon Ó Cuív to Barnagh Tunnel for Heritage Week M.Gilbert Perrin, President, European Greenways www.aevv-egwa.org, walked the 10 miles from NCWest-to Devon Road. As a result of this visit the GST has been accepted as a member of this prestigious organisation. Jean Boydell, Cormac McDonnell of Irish Sports Council [which has responsibility for the National Trails network] visit the GST.
October-The National Trails Day was celebrated with a walk/cycle from NCWest to Barnagh Tunnel. Later in the month a coach load of visitors from Kerry walked various sections of the GST as part of their public consultation process in advance of developing the Tralee-Fenit railtrail. Great Southern Trail-Railway Film Show
There was a capacity attendance of over 100 people at Newcastle West Library last Friday night. All had gathered to view archival films which recalled the railway era in Munster and Galway of half a century ago. The two hour feast of nostalgia was presented by Liam Mooney and a colleague from the Irish Railway Record Society, Dublin, www.irrs.ie to whom grateful thanks are extended.
The audience were enthralled with scenes from West Cork,West Clare, Gort, Newmarket, Castleisland, Fenit and other locations where the railway is now but a distant memory.
Highlights of the night included the 'super intelligent' railway alsatian dog who assisted the Signalman in Ardrahan and the unforgettable last steam train making its ascent of Barnagh, Co. Limerick.
Although many of the old lines have disappeared from the landscape happily the Limerick-Tralee route is an exception. It remains in CIE ownership and through the efforts of the Great Southern Trail [GST] and its partners 17 miles of it, from Ardagh to Abbeyfeale, is now available to the public for walking/cycling.
The GST is delighted to have been able to host such an enjoyable nights entertainment and is very appreciative of the support of Librarian Aileen Dillane and her staff; in particular Pat Galvin who had everything in readiness on the night.
This annual commemorative event is organised with the 'railway families' particularly in mind. Therefore it was great to have in the audience a lady whose great grandfather had worked in Newcastle West when the Prince of Wales passed through on the Royal Train from Killarney to Dublin in 1885. SPRINGTIME ON THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL [GST]
The GST will feature on 'Nuacht TG4' at 6.45pm on Sunday 8th February with some West Limerick interviewees appearing.
Work is continuing apace on the development of the 5 miles between Newcastle West and Barnagh, Co. Limerick with both JONS Contractors and the Iarnród Éireann Bridge team doing a most professional job. Redecking of the old Viaduct at Garryduff is a major element of the project. When completed there will be a continuous 17 mile walking /cycling off-road trail, along the old railway, between Abbeyfeale and Ardagh. The GST will endeavour to extend the route to Rathkeale and Ballingrane later in 2009.
The latest extension opens the prospect of West Limerick attracting considerable numbers of cycling/walking tourists. It behoves all interested parties to capitalise on the investment made by the GST and its partners in revitalising the former Limerick-Tralee railway route. The co-operation of the adjoining landowners over the past number of years is also greatly appreciated.
The Communities of Ardagh, Newcastle West, Templeglantine and Abbeyfeale are making good use of the existing Trail agus beidh fáilte roimh cuairteóirí nua now that the days are lengthening once again.
On Friday 27th March at 8.15pm Newcastle West Library will host a nostalgic evening of old railway films to commemorate Ireland's transport heritage. Former Limerick to Kerry railway line to be upgraded to cycling routeMAJOR DEVELOPMENT and upgrading works are to take place on a walking and cycling route along the former Limerick to Kerry railway line. Limerick County Council yesterday signed a €552,638 contract to commence works on the Great Southern Trail which will mean a significant tourism boost for the region in 2009. The dismantled rail lines from Newcastle West to Barnagh and Newcastle West to Ardagh, Co Limerick, is still owned by Iarnrod Éireann, which will oversee part of the works. The additional works to be undertaken involve approximately 11 km of railway line.Anthony Coleman, administrative officer, of the council, said: “This project is one of a number of cycling and walking trails being developed in Co Limerick and will form part of a designated national cycling network linked to cycling hub towns, such as Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West, to improve infrastructure and facilities for both tourists and locals. “The rolling green landscape of west Limerick and north Kerry, much of it untouched by development, makes them ideal locations for the outdoor enthusiast and casual walker alike. The Great Southern Trail is a unique 53-mile stretch of countryside in west Limerick and north Kerry and will benefit greatly from the planned improvement and upgrading works,” he added.

GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL'S WELCOMES 600,000 EURO DEVELOPMENT 2008 The Great Southern Trail Ltd. [GST] welcomes the decision of Limerick County Councillors at their meeting on November 3rd 2008 to proceed with the development by the County Council of the rail-trail between Barnagh and Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. This extension to, and upgrading of, the twelve miles of Trail already open will provide an injection of approx. 600,000 Euro to West Limerick in these straitened times. It is also worth noting that the decision was made on the thirty-third anniversary of the complete withdrawal of rail services from the line in 1975. Fifty seven submissions were received by Limerick County Council during the six week planning period. The vast majority were supportive of the proposal with only two being treated as outright objections. The GST wishes to thank all who took the trouble to make submissions and is satisfied that any legitimate concerns will be addressed. In this regard the GST wishes to place on record its appreciation of the support and cooperation of adjoining property owners along the 12 miles which have been open for the past number of years. When the works are completed there will be a seventeen mile cycle/walkway between Abbeyfeale and Ardagh which will be attractive to locals and visitors alike. The historic and scenic route broadly parallels the N21 and a further extension from Ardagh to Rathkeale would provide easy access from the N21 at each end. With the continued support of the various State and Local agencies this objective is capable of realisation in 2009. The GST wishes to thank Minister Amon Cu V and his Department for their ongoing support along with that of West Limerick Resources, Heritage Council, Filte Ireland, Shannon Development, Foras na Gaeilge and C.I.E for their financial and technical assistance.GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL'S NATIONAL DAY SUNDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2008
All are welcome to meet at Halla Inse B n, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick [7 Miles West of Newcastle on the N21] on Sunday 28th September, at 3 p.m. to walk or cycle on the old railway line for an hour or two. The route includes the beautiful oak wood at Tullig which will be resplendent at this time of year. Refreshments in the Halla at journey's end. That afternoon thirty people visited Barnagh Tunnel and then did a loop walk to Glendarragh, where the late poet, Michael Hartnett, once lived. Return to Barnagh was along the old railway. The group then travelled by cars [due to the closure of the Glenmageen road since the 'floods'] to Glenquin Castle. Here all 100+ steps were ascended and the panoramic views enjoyed. The afternoon concluded at the nearby Killeedy Castle and St.Ita's Graveyard where the Saint is buried.
The previous Sunday also witnessed another GST outing. That day the old railway from Newcastle West to Ardagh was traversed and included a visit to Ardagh Fort, where the famous Chalice was found. These events continue the custom of celebrating Heritage Week.

Great Southern Trail - Annual General Meeting - 2007 The Annual General Meeting of the Great Southern Trail will be held at the G.A.A. Rooms, The Demesne, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick on Fri. 10th August at 8 p.m. All supporters are requested to attend if possible as it is important that each community along the route of the old Limerick-Tralee railway share in the project. Development of the Trail has been rapid in recent years with 12 miles now available for recreation. Minister Amon Cuv, when opening the Abbeyfeale to Barnagh section recently, looked forward to the Trail being completed as soon as possible. So, for anybody who has been thinking of getting involved-now is the opportune time ;agus beidh filte romhat. THE FOLLOWING REPORT APPEARED IN THE 'LIMERICK LEADER' NEWSPAPER ON JUNE 9th 2007 O Cuiv pledges extra funding towards upkeep of railway trail. A CABINET Minister has promised that resources will be made available for the maintenance of the eight-mile stretch of the newly-completed walk and cycleway between Abbeyfeale and Barnagh. The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Amon Cuiv, was speaking as he officially opened the facility at Abbeyfeale last Thursday.
The Minister looked forward to the completion of the walk all the way from Tralee along the bed of the former railway to where it meets the present Limerick to Foynes line at Ballingrane, Rathkeale, a distance of 53 miles. As well as the Abbeyfeale to Barnagh section, the group, Great Southern Trail, have developed the section through Barnagh tunnel and the from Newcastle West to Ardagh.
Praising the voluntary membership who had persisted with the idea since the 1980s, Minister Cuiv said that rural reconstruction and tourism were becoming increasingly appreciated.
Thursday s ceremony, at which a commemorative plaque was unveiled, was conducted almost entirely in Irish.
Trail chairman Liam O Mahony outlined the history of the project, which had come about after attempts to get the railway itself reopened had failed. The group had support from Shannon Development, initially, but they had, he said, fallen back on a bunch of amateurs.
But persistence had paid off, he said, and official support had been made available from a number of sources after CIE had accepted the project s worth.
With the completion of this stretch, it is time to advance to a new plane, said Mr O Mahony. We need a dedicated maintenance crew, possibly through West Limerick Resources, and we need a trail manager. A further 37 miles, 12 of them in Limerick, remain to be done. It would be the manager s job to draw the local authorities in further.
Barnagh and Rathkeale, he said, were two locations where access to the trail was impeded by road construction.
Mr O Mahony said that his group had been pioneers in the scene of conservation of abandoned railways, and other areas had studied the work which they had done, and benefited from experience already gained.
Referring to the access problem, Minister Cuiv said that there was always a way around roads.
Former railways were very suitable for walkways and cycleways because they were flat, said the Minister, who added that it was fortunate that the railway, although abandoned and taken up, had not been sold, as had been the case elsewhere.
He accepted Mr O Mahony s case for constant maintenance.
If not maintained, there is little point in putting in the capital in the first place, he said.
Minister Cuiv also foresaw a dual role for a trail manager. Firstly such a person would be a trouble-shooter to liaise with landowners beside the trail and seeing to litter problems and that fences were not knocked.
I see the Rural Social Scheme providing the labour, the Community Services Programme providing management, and then there would be money needed for materials, he said. The previous cap of 50 per cent on grants had been raised to 75 per cent.
The ceremony, which was attended by about 150 people, was chaired by Great Southern Trail secretary Mike Mac Domhnaill. The trail was blessed by Fr Leo McDonnell, CC, Abbeyfeale. Shay Riordan, manager of West Limerick Resources, also spoke.
As well as the portions of track bed developed by Great Southern Trail, a short length, including the bridge over the Deel, has been restored within the town by Rathkeale community council and the Irish Palatine Association. It is called the Matrix Way.

An attendance in excess of 60 people braved the elements on Friday 3rd March to view the slide show in Newcastle West Library on the Limerick-Foynes-Tralee-Fenit railway. The two hours of nostalgia was presented by Mr. Barry Carse of Dublin who is an avid railway enthusiast.
The "Railway Families" were very well represented at this 4th Annual event with Whelan, O'Donovan, Moone [all Newcastle West]; Madigan [Foynes]; O'Neill [Adare]; Murphy [Barnagh]; Stack [Abbeyfeale/Listowel] and Fitzgerald [Tralee] among the list of those whose people had staffed the Stations, crewed the trains and looked after the 'Permanent Way' of the old 'North Kerry' line.
The night also marked the presentation to Limerick County Library of a collection of railway reference books donated by the family of the late Francis [Francie] Kennedy of Kilmallock who was also a great lover of railways. These books are now available at Newcastle West Library.
Thanks to Aileen Dillane, Librarian, for facilitating the evening and to staff members Pat Galvin and Liam English for attending to all the organisational details. Fermanagh in 2006 with the walks programme including sections of the old Great Northern Railway and the County Donegal Railway as well as Lakeshore and Forest routes. The show will be presented by Mr. Barry Carse, a renowned photographer of the Irish railway scene. Barry's slides cover all stations between Limerick and Foynes as well as those between Rathkeale and Fenit (via Listowel and Tralee). The night is certain to evoke happy memories of a bygone era. This is the fourth annual reunion of the railway personnel and their families who served with CIÉ on the old "North Kerry" railway but, of course, all interested persons are most welcome to attend. Beidh fáilte romhat. The occasion will also formally mark the donation to Limerick County Library of a collection of railway books belonging to the late Francis (Francie) Kennedy R.I.P. of Kilmallock. Francie, who died in June, 2005 after a short illness, was an avid railway enthusiast all his life. The Great Southern Trail organises this event as a "Thank You" to those who gave their working lives on what is now being developed as a public walkway. The Great Southern Trail is hosting three separate walks on Sunday September 4th to celebrate Heritage Week. The walks are of different lengths and cater for various levels of fitness. All are welcome to participate free of charge. A facility to book meals will be provided during the walks but these are optional and must be paid for individually.
The "A" Walk assembly point is The Square, Newcastle West at 9.30 a.m. where free transport will be provided to the Old Railway Station entrance at Abbeyfeale. From there a fourteen mile trek back to Newcastle will commence. This walk will be partly on the railway route and partly on public roads. Waterproof footwear and visibility vests are advised. It is hoped to visit Barnagh Railway Tunnel along the way.
The "B" Walk assembly point is at Glenquin Castle, near Killeedy (on the R515 Dromcollogher - Abbeyfeale Road) at 12 o'clock noon. Free transport will be provided to the old railway bridge at Garryduff. Following a short talk on our railway heritage and a viewing of the adjacent railway viaduct the 10 mile walk will commence. This walk is entirely on roads and forest tracks. The first two miles is uphill and reasonable fitness is necessary. Please bring a visibility vest for safety. The route goes along the Bog Road and over Barnagh Hill with stunning views. It continues over Barnagh Tunnel to Glenmageen (another climb here) before descending by Rathcahill to Strand. The final mile to Glenquin Castle is again uphill with the ultimate challenge being the ascent of the Castle's spiral staircase although this is not compulsory!
The "C" Walk assembly point is at the restored Station House in Bishop Court, Newcastle West at 2.30 p.m. The six mile return trip to Ardagh is almost wholly along the old railway where blackberries should be in abundance. From Ardagh Station a short road journey leads to the site where the Ardagh Chalice was found at Reerasta Fort.
It is hope that participants in all three walks will gather outside the Desmond Banqueting Hall in The Square, Newcastle West at 5.00 pm before adjourning to discuss their adventures over a meal and/or a drink.

Hedge and grass cutting began and the route was cleared for the Heritage Week walk, subsequent work in the Autumn/Winter saw the erection of some security barriers as well as the resurfacing of a particularly wet stretch. 6 International Volunteers commenced the process by re-decking the bridge over the River Daar, 1 km out from Newcastle West. A large 8’ x 4’ sign was also erected at the Trail entrance near Newcastle West. In total over 5,000.00 euro of GST funds were used in these basic improvements. The availability of this walking route has enabled us to host 25 organised walks over the past twelve months. International Volunteers in July, 2003 took on the task of rebuilding a previously demolished bridge at Tullig Wood, 5 miles to the east of Abbeyfeale, using a combination of old railway timbers and some new material. Together with some experienced local aid they had the new structure ready for an official opening on Bank Holiday Monday, August 4th The result is that a further 2.5 miles walk is new readily accessible in one of the most scenic locations along the Great Southern Trail. The 5,000.00 euro grant given by the Heritage Council which enabled a comprehensive study of the flora and fauna of the tunnel and its approaches to be undertaken.
